Following the massive success of Dahmer, Ryan Murphy will return to Netflix on September 19 with Monsters: The Lyle & Erik Menendez Story.

The second part of his true crime anthology series. After murdering their parents in 1989, the Menendez brothers became celebrities in the early 1990s.

During his nationally televised criminal trial,  Erik Menendez's lawyers, led by attorney Leslie Abramson, argued self-defense against his brother. 

Prosecutors accused their father, Jose Menendez, and their neglectful mother, Kitty Menendez, of abusing them and justifying the murders. One of the prosecutors, Pam Bozanich, said,

The motive was financial gain, which was further reinforced by the Menendez brothers' extravagant spending on their property following the murders.

The first trial ended with a negative jury verdict, and the Menendez brothers' case was not reopened until a retrial was requested in 1995.
